Why Choose Stainless Steel for Exhaust System

As the development of the society, automobile play a very important actor in the people’s living. And the exhaust system as the important part of the automobile, has been taken more and more attention.
In the past few decades, Europe and Japan took the lead in putting Ferrite stainless steel in automobile exhaust system. It is because that stainless steels (Ferrite stainless steel and Austenitic stainless steel) with good performance of high temperature characteristics and high corrosion resistance meet the social needs for clean exhaust gases and reduced weight for better fuel economy. 

Materials for Automotive exhaust system

The exhaust of the automobile steel pipe passes through the last system of the exhaust pipe manifold, catalytic converter, and main muffler. Exhaust system commonly used stainless steel 409L, 436L, 441, etc. The automobile center muffler is mainly made of stainless steel welded pipe.
 
Actually the exhaust pipes, mufflers and other exhaust system components are mainly made of Ferrite stainless steel. In other cases, nickel and titanium alloys, even ceramics make up the whole system.

The stainless steel used for these components are SUS409L, SUS 436LM, SUS 439L, SUS 436L, SUS 436J1L, SUS 432L, SUS 429LM, SUS 441L and SUS 430J1L. The center muffler is the final part in the exhaust system, so stainless steel mufflers should have very high corrosion resistance and the addition of chromium and molybdenum then can improve these properties.

There are two kinds of stainless steel tubes commonly used in automobile muffler: 304 and 409 stainless steel.

304 stainless vs 409 stainless

• 1.304 stainless steel muffler has better corrosion resistance and 409 muffler is easy to rust and has poor corrosion resistance.
• 2.304 muffler exhaust pipe has high temperature resistance.It can reach 650 degrees, the same as 409 stainless steel muffler pipes.
• 3. the price of 304 stainless steel is nearly twice than the price of ss 409 price.
